Big Idea #2: Live Augusta — Financial Housing Incentives for Employees to Live Near Work

Part of the "ASCENDERS" initiative

HousingAugusta/Richmond$250,000–$500,000

Overview

Create Employer-Assisted Housing incentives for eligible employees to live and invest in intown Augusta communities immediately surrounding their place of employment. The program would provide three housing options: assistance for purchasing a new or existing home, assistance for renting, and matching funds for exterior improvements on already-owned property in the designated area. Augusta University is recommended as the lead institution, with expected participation from other employers such as Fort Gordon, Unisys, and area hospitals.

Action plan

Short-term
Establish partners, funding, and program guidelines; create a pilot program for University employees, sponsored at least in part by the University with potential grant assistance from the Community Foundation; administer the pilot through either the University or INSPIRE Augusta, Inc.; establish program boundaries, either separate employer boundaries or a selected district where all employers are equal participants; establish a website as a central clearinghouse for district information, properties for sale and rent, neighborhood information, amenities, and incentive program information.
Medium-term
With partnerships and funding in place, open the program for applications and participants.
Long-term
Encourage other employer partnerships such as Fort Gordon; create separate boundaries for a Fort Gordon Employer-Assisted Housing program that contributes to revitalization of suburban Augusta close to the base.
