Big Idea #3: The Silicon River Fund

Part of the "SILICON RIVER" initiative

Economic DevelopmentColumbus-Muscogee$250,000–$500,000

Overview

Establish The Silicon River Fund, a venture-capital-backed residency program that supports entrepreneurs in the high-value tech space. The initiative would create a fund structure, raise capital, build partnerships, support selected pre-PMF startup teams, provide workspace, housing, amenities, mentorship, and financial support, and attract startups to relocate operations and staff to Columbus. The fund is intended to stimulate innovation, drive economic growth, create jobs, diversify local industry, and position Columbus as an attractive and affordable home base for early-stage entrepreneurs.

Action plan

Short-term
Establish fund structure under StartUP Columbus with two branches: one focused on investment and operations of startups and another dedicated to local entrepreneurial initiatives. Hire an executive director, establish a Board of Directors with diverse industry expertise, select principals to guide the investment thesis and fundraising, engage securities attorneys, identify and approach potential investors, create a fundraising strategy, and build partnerships with local organizations, educational institutions, government entities, accelerators, incubators, and business-support organizations.
Medium-term
By Year 5: Secure sufficient capital to capitalize the fund, recruit an investment team and support staff, conduct due diligence, support portfolio companies, host at least 10 teams in residency per year, develop a program supporting alumni who remain in Columbus, lobby for business incorporation incentives and quality-of-life enhancements, and expand PR/marketing to attract early-stage entrepreneurs from target collegiate programs, underrepresented founders, established professionals, women, and BIPOC founders.
Long-term
Year 10+: Drive significant economic impact by supporting portfolio-company growth, job creation, and positive local economic activity. Host at least 25 teams in residency per year, maintain a long-term financial strategy for continuity and growth of the fund, grow regional and national recognition of Columbus as a startup ecosystem, and create a tech-centric industry conference attracting industry leaders, investors, and startups.
