Big Idea #2: Expand Routes to Vitality

Part of the "Gateway Gang" initiative

TransportationDublin/Laurens$1,000,000+

Overview

Improve Dublin’s non-motorized gateways and bicycle tourism network by promoting State Bicycle Route 40, adding wayfinding and destination signage, installing shared-lane markings, creating bike parking, developing multi-use paths and bicycle facilities, and connecting pedestrian and non-motorized traffic from I-16/441 to downtown and the proposed Riverwalk. The recommendation positions Dublin as a midpoint bicycle-tourism destination between Columbus and Savannah.

Action plan

Short-term
Phase I, July 2015-July 2016: Install wayfinding signage along Bellevue Avenue/US 80 identifying the route as State Bicycle Route 40; add mileage or distance-to-destination signage directing cyclists to downtown Dublin, Greenway, restaurants, lodging, and other destinations; add shared lane markings, “Share the Road,” “Bicycles Allowed Full Use of Lane,” and other bicycle signage where appropriate; install bicycle parking spaces at desired destinations.
Medium-term
Phase II, July 2016-July 2019: Install 12-foot paved multi-use paths alongside Bellevue Avenue; during routine resurfacing, reconfigure lane widths to add bicycle facilities in priority order: buffered bike lanes, bike lanes, bikeable shoulders, and painted intersection treatments. Design and construct a bicycle tourist pocket park in or near Downtown Dublin with sheltered bike parking, restrooms, water fountain, mobile bicycle repair stand, bicycle supplies/snack vending, and camp sites/overnight shelter if appropriate. Phase III, July 2016-July 2020: Partner with GDOT, surrounding counties, and the MPOs from Columbus and Savannah to plan and prioritize bicycle facilities and signage along the rest of SBR 40.
Long-term
Continue improving bicycle safety and access as opportunities arise during routine resurfacing, reconstruction, and bridge replacement. Support an official spring/fall bicycle tour of SBR 40. Implement non-motorized gateway improvements, connect pedestrian traffic at I-16/441 to Downtown Dublin, and develop pedestrian and non-motorized access to key sectors through the proposed Riverwalk and Oconee River corridor.
