Part of the "MILLY RISING" initiative

TourismMilledgeville/Baldwin$250,000–$500,000

Overview

Connect and market Milledgeville/Baldwin County’s natural assets, including Lake Sinclair, the Oconee River, Oconee River Greenway, Bertram Wildlife Management Area, Berry Farm Conservation Area, and existing biking and hiking trails. The goal is to improve access, connect assets to each other and to the community, create a shared Milledgeville/Baldwin County experience, improve quality of life, increase visitor engagement, and support economic diversification.

Action plan

Short-term
Support Oconee River Water Trail designation; inventory trails, access points, scenic views, and recreation programs; list opportunities on the Baldwin County Recreation Department website; create and manage recreation social media; create a map and brochure; identify outdoor recreation and lifestyle businesses for annual impact tracking; add gazebos, pavilions, benches, and #ScenicMilly markers; increase paid social media and traditional advertising; offer recreation tours; develop an Outdoor Milledgeville-Baldwin County app.
Medium-term
Improve or create public access to Lake Sinclair with a beach, picnic area, pavilion, barbeques, swimming area, and playground; improve or add biking and hiking trails, especially in Oconee River Greenway, Bertram Wildlife Management Area, Central State Hospital, and Berry Farm Conservation Area; install trailhead and community entry signage; create an annual community event for trail cleanup and improvements with schools, colleges, and other interested parties.
Long-term
Expand and connect existing trails where gaps exist; implement a Rails-to-Trails program; create a walkable/bikeable corridor along Greene Street connecting downtown greenspace to Oconee River Greenway; collaborate with river landowners to promote private development aligned with the public vision; sell excess water capacity to entrepreneurs such as water bottling or microbrewery businesses; offer a bus/transportation route to improve access to recreation resources or bring recreation activities to people.
