Big Idea #1: Driving Dollars to Dublin

Part of the "Gateway Gang" initiative

TourismDublin/Laurens$500,000–$1,000,000

Overview

Redesign and improve Dublin’s motor vehicle, non-motor vehicle, and virtual gateways using Visit Dublin’s existing “Ahead of the Curve” brand. The recommendation focuses first on I-16 Exit 51 and State Highway 441, then expands to additional community gateways, lighting, directional signage, landscaping, banner signs, and corridor beautification so travelers can more easily move from interstate exits into Downtown Dublin and other destinations across Laurens County.

Action plan

Short-term
Phase I: July 2015-July 2017. Incorporate Visit Dublin’s “Dublin, Ahead of the Curve” brand into signage and infrastructure; install “DUBLIN” signage on the 441 overpass in both eastbound and westbound lanes; illuminate proposed signage at night; brand exit ramps, medians, and green space with flowers and shrubbery; expand green-space branding from the City Hall lawn to exits and entry points; install decorative light posts and banner signs along key 441 intersections.
Medium-term
Phase III: July 2019-July 2021. Expand gateway improvements beyond the main 441 gateway to additional priority gateways: Hwy 441 Bypass & Hwy 80, I-16 & Hwy 257, Hwy 441 Bypass & Business 441 / Old 441, Hwy 80 at Oconee River, and I-16 & Hwy 19. Add lighting, signage, lampposts, directional information, and gateway branding at each intersection. Include information about existing historic structures, local interest areas, the proposed River Walk, public art, fountains, and historic buildings.
Long-term
Phase IV: July 2021-July 2026. Replace the five-lane 441 turn lane with a grass median where appropriate to improve the corridor’s appearance, provide places for signs and light posts, extend signage into the corridor, and improve safety for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Continue long-term branding, beautification, and corridor gateway implementation.
