Big Idea #2: Regional Workforce Coalition and The Rising River Valley Fund

Part of the "SILICON RIVER" initiative

EducationColumbus-MuscogeeUnder $250,000

Overview

Develop a collaborative, invigorated, and sustainable workforce / education ecosystem by creating an independent regional education and workforce coalition. The coalition would conduct data analysis, research, assessment, listening sessions, and a comprehensive workforce study while connecting residents, schools, employers, institutions, government bodies, and community organizations. The initiative also proposes creating The Rising River Valley Fund to guarantee free education for qualified Muscogee County residents and support workforce growth through education, partnerships, and long-term investment in local talent.

Action plan

Short-term
Year 1: Analyze current data and recent findings, offer listening sessions in every community, and invest in a comprehensive workforce study. Form a steering committee, research other community models, develop a strategic plan by the end of the first 12 months, educate the public on the importance of education and workforce growth, define measurable goals, create cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities, assess infrastructure and connectivity, and engage stakeholders including employees, students, educators, industry partners, government bodies, and community organizations.
Medium-term
Years 1-2 / 1-3: Use the coalition to oversee research and planning for The Rising River Valley Fund. Analyze tuition costs, enrollment trends, and financial aid availability; create a comprehensive plan for a tuition-free initiative; define eligibility criteria, program duration, covered expenses, and program scope; develop an application and selection process; identify recipient requirements; secure funding through grants, donations, corporate partnerships, or local taxes; build partnerships with businesses and organizations; collaborate with educational institutions; design industry-aligned curricula; establish industry partnerships; create internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities; develop student pathways; and offer skills-development opportunities.
Long-term
Years 3-5: Regularly evaluate regional efforts, recommend adjusted strategies based on feedback and changing conditions, engage a third-party review of Columbus’ economic indicators, compile and organize education and workforce ecosystem data, use program results and evidence to influence policies and public opinion, reevaluate the coalition’s composition, and adjust the initiative as Columbus’ needs change.
