Big Idea #2: Neighborhood Opportunity Centers

Part of the "THE DALTON BELIEVERS" initiative

EducationDalton-Whitfield $250,000–$500,000

Overview

Establish Neighborhood Opportunity Centers near elementary school neighborhoods across Dalton and Whitfield County. Each center would bring together residents, schools, faith-based communities, city and county government, volunteers, and industry partners to provide a needs-based hub of programming and resources for children and families. The centers would be designed around the Whole Family Framework and support outcomes such as healthy families, school engagement, safety, belonging, access to resources, and long-term educational and career success.

Action plan

Short-term
In Year 1, Young Gamechangers team members assist Believe Greater Dalton / Greater Dalton Chamber team in applying for a 3-year Spencer Foundation grant. The Chamber uses the provided job description to create and fill the NOC Program Director role, potentially in partnership with the City of Dalton and Dalton Public School System to share costs.
Medium-term
In Years 2-3, the Program Director coordinates neighborhood-based efforts to design and establish each school zone’s NOC. Work begins with the neighborhood surrounding Valley Point Elementary, mirroring the Roan and Beechland Centers model. Implementation depends on volunteers, neighborhood residents, school personnel, and supporting agencies.
Long-term
In Years 4-5, the Program Director identifies neighborhoods and determines the order of future NOC sites based on school/neighborhood location, free/reduced lunch or Title I status, access to resources, and local desire for a center. The Program Director secures long-term funding and support, while Young Gamechangers and Dalton State College collect data on outcomes and impact.
