Big Idea #1: Intangible Connections

Part of the "SOUL CITY CONNECTORS" initiative

Civic EngagementAugusta/RichmondUnder $250,000

Overview

Strengthen and establish deeper relationships between Augusta University, its students, citizens, businesses, and community organizations throughout the urban core. The recommendation focuses on intangible but visible daily connections through a Jag Card merchant program, a Jaguar Journey public art and school-spirit installation, and Augusta in Action service-learning/applied-research partnerships that connect university resources with neighborhood needs

Action plan

Short-term
“Jag Swag”: Work with merchants in the urban core to establish a program where students can use their Jag Card to make purchases off campus for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Medium-term
“Jaguar Journey”: Partner with a local charity to implement a program similar to Athens’ “Bulldogs on Broad” or Statesboro’s “Eagle Nation on Parade,” using public art to build school spirit, brand the district, and potentially fund small projects within urban core neighborhoods.
Long-term
“Augusta in Action”: Work with Augusta University’s Office of Experiential Learning to engage in community-driven service learning and applied research projects in urban core neighborhoods; establish a committee of community stakeholders and faculty already engaged in service learning; connect AU resources with community needs and create a single point of contact between the University and urban core residents, businesses, and leaders.

Estimated budget

Most interventions are low- to no-cost and leverage stakeholder engagement and project champions. Jag Swag costs are estimated using the Bulldogs Bucks model and would require total merchant enrollment of approximately $500; participating merchants would be reimbursed monthly or weekly by the University. Jaguar Journey could raise funds for private start-up and seed money for ongoing initiatives.
