Part of the "COMMUNICATE. CONNECT. COLUMBUS" initiative

Civic EngagementColumbus-Muscogee$250,000–$500,000

Overview

Standardize and strengthen internal and external communications infrastructure across the Columbus Consolidated Government by expanding the operational capacity of the Communications and Community Affairs Department. The initiative implements a comprehensive four-pronged framework: (1) Formulating an exhaustive, strategic communications master plan with crisis protocols; (2) Establishing efficient internal administrative channels to unify messaging across municipal departments; (3) Enhancing external outbound channels via digital platforms and localized newsletters to scale resident reach (+12k distribution baseline); and (4) Building robust media relations pipelines to proactively distribute public notices and coordinate community event coverage.

Action plan

Short-term
(Short-Term Goals/Action Items Year 1): Hire an expert public relations firm or consultant via a competitive bid process to conduct an exhaustive external communications audit and needs assessment; document all current communication channels to identify localized information gaps; establish a clear, CCG-style visual brand and messaging guide; update the official municipal website layout; begin process to unify all cross-departmental communication channels under a single cohesive brand.
Medium-term
(Medium-Term Goals/Action Items Years 2-3): Coordinate an off-site government planning retreat with elected officials and department heads to execute a comprehensive SWOT analysis and establish strategic outreach priorities; forge an intentional partnership with Columbus State University (CSU) to create a permanent course curriculum path and undergraduate/graduate intern pipeline, providing the department with hands-on technical capacity and staffing support.
Long-term
(Long-Term Goals/Action Items Years 3+): Maintain, refine, and flesh out the communication strategies and outreach infrastructure established during years 1–3; scale up personnel within the Office of Communications and Community Affairs to support robust cross-departmental brand alignment; execute regular community-wide surveys to continuously evaluate messaging reliability and transparency; secure recurring state and local funding lines to maintain the open open data portal networks.
