Big Idea #1: Cyber Soul

Part of the "SOUTH COLUMBUS SOUL" initiative

InfrastructureColumbus-MuscogeeUnder $250,000

Overview

Establish South Columbus as a digital city of the future by expanding broadband readiness, digital literacy, internet safety education, affordable internet enrollment, and youth technology training. The initiative includes four components: make Columbus a Broadband Ready Community, create digital literacy and web safety education programs, increase awareness of the Affordable Connectivity Program, and develop a Youth Tech Prep program. The goal is to reduce barriers to education and employment, increase technology-sector employment, expand remote-role access, and support economic mobility in South Columbus.

Action plan

Short-term
Receive Broadband Ready designation from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Complete the online application through broadband.georgia.gov, with the Economic or Community Development Department completing it on behalf of the City of Columbus. Create digital literacy and internet safety education by extending Georgia Standards of Excellence learning standards beyond K-5 into middle and high schools. Build partnerships with local institutions such as libraries, technical colleges, Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, and service organizations to provide free information and courses. Begin developing targeted partnerships with schools and nonprofit organizations that have access to youth and can pilot courses in advanced technology.
Medium-term
Create online job fairs and job posting boards for the South Columbus community, with at least 2 virtual job fairs per year and community partners such as Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers managing the online job posting service. Create tech job training and work-from-home training. Explore Youth Tech Certification opportunities through programs such as Microsoft, Google, CompTIA, CASP+, CYSA+, and Cloud+, and provide training at local schools, pop-up clinics, and accessible venues. Promote Affordable Connectivity Program awareness through public signage, public splash pages, social media campaigns, and information at city halls, libraries, schools, and fire stations.
Long-term
Continue Youth Tech Certification programs with emphasis on adult and family members, using similar delivery methods. Expand Affordable Internet efforts through automatic enrollment when qualifying individuals interact with the City of Columbus during eligibility events such as SNAP applications, driver’s license processes, or school enrollment. Continue building digital literacy, certification pathways, and affordable internet access so South Columbus can foster a thriving cyber city that empowers residents and supports success in the digital age.
