Big Idea #2: Destination Downtown Dalton

Part of the "DESTINATION DALTON" initiative

Downtown DevelopmentDalton-Whitfield Under $250,000

Overview

Implement three connected downtown initiatives: a Taco Trail program using local restaurants; renovation of the city-owned rail car and train depot deck into a train-watching and local food/beverage destination; and redevelopment of the Burr Park parking deck into a two-level parking structure with retail, observation deck, pedestrian bridge, and event space.

Action plan

Short-term
For the Taco Trail, meet with proposed partners, poll restaurants for interest, select a digital third-party platform, and begin sign-up. For the train car, identify interested entrepreneurs and begin discussions with the City, Chamber, DDA, and DIA. For the parking structure, engage engineering firms to determine viable structure design and funding sources.
Medium-term
Launch Taco Trail marketing, print materials, and community participation. Renovate the train car while entrepreneurs identify concepts and vendors. Hold meetings with the City and DDA to discuss funding options for the parking structure and begin securing future tenants.
Long-term
Measure Taco Trail engagement through the digital platform. Complete the train car and depot deck activation as a food/beverage and train-watching destination. Construct the parking structure with retail, observation deck, pedestrian bridge, and event/event-overflow space.
